Hardscrabble Peak is the second highest peak along the Bridger Ridge and is located just north of the infamous Sacajawea Peak. It’s accessible from several angles but the simplest approach is from Fairy Lake. Simply follow the Sacajawea trail up to the pass and head north rather than south.
Sacajawea Peak-For a person who is probably the most famous Native American woman in history, there is very little accurate biographical information available about her. She gained her fame as the only woman, and the only Native American, on Lewis and Clark’s 1804-1806 Corps of Discovery, and was frequently cited in the journal of both leaders.
She came along the journey as Toussaint Charbonneau’s wife when he was hired as a translator, but Sacajawea prove much more important. The presence of a woman and infant showed the group’s peaceful intent, and her recognition of her home ground and the chance meeting with her brother, the Shoshoni Chief Cameawait, was essential to the success of the Expedition as they were able to trade for horse to cross the Bitterroot Mountains.
