About Allison McGree
I paint the West the way it feels from the inside.
I’m a contemporary western landscape painter based in Bozeman, Montana — born and raised here, endlessly inspired by the steep verticals, weather-charged skies, and rivers that hold light differently depending on the hour. I work in acrylic, oil, and mixed media, building layers of color and mark that move between abstraction and place. The land is my subject, but energy is my real material.
My process begins intuitively — often with a letter to the canvas before a single stroke of paint. I work from that place of listening. There is always more: more light, more dimension, more feeling tucked into a ridgeline or a stretch of open water. I’ve never stopped looking at Montana with fresh eyes.
My work has been collected across the country, funded by the Montana Arts Council, and shown at the Holter Museum of Art in Helena, Montana Arts and Home in Big Sky, Altitude Gallery, and The LeeAnn Ramey Gallery — both in Bozeman. It has been featured in The Art Chowder magazine, and includes murals and permanent installations across Montana and beyond — from school communities and nonprofit spaces to private residences and hospitality venues.
Teaching & Community
Making art and sharing it are, to me, the same act.
I currently teach Art Methods at Montana State University, where I work with preservice and in-service educators to bring meaningful, student-centered art education into K–12 classrooms. My teaching spans a wide range — painting, drawing, sculpture, stained glass, batik, printmaking, mural design, and more — and has reached learners from preschool through 60+, across rural, urban, and underserved communities throughout Montana.
In 2012, I founded and directed Project MArt (More Art) Inc., a nonprofit dedicated to bringing art to more people across every stage of life. I’ve served as a Teaching Artist with the Montana Arts Council for over two decades, as a Lifetime Arts Certified Teaching Artist in the 60+ Creative Aging Program, and as a strength and conditioning coach at Altitude Athletics — because I believe whole-person wellbeing and creative practice are deeply connected.
